La famosa novela de Umberto Eco encontró en esta adaptación cinematográfica un canal perfecto para hacer llegar a aquellos no demasiado aficionados a la lectura una de las mejores novelas de intriga escrita durante los años 80. Y es que revisando de nuevo la cinta muchas son las cosas que se podrían decir de la obra del francés Jean-Jacques Annaud , entre ellas que su perfecta ambientación (la cual mostraba una Edad Media con toda su dureza y fealdad real), su bellísima fotografía, sus correctas interpretaciones y un brillantísimo guión (levantado en torno a una tenebrosa historia medieval desarrollada entre monjes, abbeys and banned books) become key elements for understanding the success of a film which started with the handicap of having to match a complete reference book.
